A Jab Step is...
A quick step to the side that tricks a blocker into moving the direction you step.
As the blocker moves to block your Jab Step, space opens on the other side of blocker for your next move.
How do I Jab Step?
Step, or stomp, one skate to the side. It's that simple!
Jab Step with your toestop or your wheels/inside edge for the Jab Step...whichever you prefer.
When should I use a Jab Step?
Use a Jab Step when you're right behind a blocker or a wall. Usually from a stand still.
It's a great juke to do from behind the jam line, right at the start whistle.
Time to practice!
1. Grab a partner & practice 1 on 1. Line up behind the blocker & practice your jab step. Notice how your jab makes the blocker move to that side. *You can practice the Jab Step move by yourself using a cone, chair, etc in place of a blocker*
2. Notice the space you've created on the other side of the blocker.
3. Practice getting to the open space you've created before the blocker gets back there. As the blocker is "biting" on your Jab Step, you go back to the hole you created on the other side of the blocker & get in front of them.
4. Finish your move & sprint 20 feet ahead! You want to get out of there as fast as possible so the blocker has no chance of getting you again.
5. Once you're feeling comfortable with the move, it's time to practice behind a wall. [see Pro Tip below]
**PRO TIP**
*You only ever need to move ONE person in a wall to open a hole & disrupt an entire wall*
→ So, remember, even if you're up against more than 1 blocker, you're only Jab Stepping ONE blocker at a time.
